From Milan With Taste — How Italian Food Culture Inspires BonAppaTee
Some cities leave an impression. Others leave a flavour.
Milan managed to do both.
As the founder of BonAppaTee, travel has always been one of my greatest sources of inspiration. Every destination offers a chance to experience local food culture firsthand — to taste the dishes, learn the traditions, and understand the stories that have shaped a place for generations.
And few cities blend culture, craftsmanship, and style quite like Milan.
While many people visit Milan for its fashion, architecture, and design, I arrived with something else on my mind: food.
Because at BonAppaTee, great food isn't just something to eat. It's a source of inspiration.
Eating Like a Milanese
Milan's food culture isn't loud or flashy. Like the city itself, it's confident, refined, and deeply rooted in tradition.
One of my first memorable meals was Osso Buco served with Risotto alla Milanese — tender braised veal shank resting on saffron-infused risotto, glowing with its unmistakable golden colour. Rich, comforting, and beautifully balanced, it's a dish that feels uniquely Milanese.
Then came Cotoletta alla Milanese, perhaps the city's most famous specialty. A thick, bone-in veal cutlet fried in clarified butter until perfectly golden. No unnecessary embellishments. Just exceptional ingredients prepared with care and confidence.
As I explored the city, the meals kept coming.
A classic Caprese salad with creamy mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and fresh basil. A beautifully simple plate that proves great ingredients often need very little help.
A bowl of Spaghetti alle Vongole, bright and briny with fresh clams and olive oil.
Tagliatelle Bolognese, rich and slow-cooked, where every bite felt like a lesson in patience and tradition.
And perhaps the most surprising dish of all: pane, burro e alici — bread, butter, and anchovies. Three humble ingredients transformed into something unforgettable.
And of course, no journey through Italy would be complete without Tiramisù, one of the country's most iconic desserts.
Each meal offered a glimpse into the culture, history, and values that define Italian cuisine.
Why Food Inspires Art
Every dish tells a story.
The foods we remember most are rarely memorable because of complexity alone. They're memorable because they represent a place, a tradition, a family recipe, or a moment in time.
That's exactly what inspires the artwork behind BonAppaTee.
Whether it's sushi from Japan, pasta from Italy, street food from around the world, or pastries from a neighbourhood bakery, every design begins with a food that carries meaning.
When I create a new illustration, I'm not simply drawing ingredients.
I'm trying to capture the experience of eating that dish.
The anticipation of the first bite.
The atmosphere of the restaurant.
The memories attached to a meal shared with friends and family.
Those experiences become the foundation of the designs that eventually find their way onto our shirts.
What Milan Taught Me About Premium Design
Milan is often described as the fashion capital of the world.
Walking through the city — past the Duomo, beneath the glass ceilings of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and along the elegant streets of Via Montenapoleone — you begin to understand why.
The best design in Milan isn't loud.
It's intentional.
Every detail feels considered. Every element serves a purpose.
That philosophy resonates deeply with how I approach BonAppaTee.
Our goal has never been to create novelty food shirts.
Instead, we focus on creating premium food-inspired apparel that celebrates food culture through thoughtful design, original artwork, and quality craftsmanship.
In many ways, Milan reinforced what BonAppaTee already strives to be:
